When considering a new opportunity, many accountants think about more than just the role itself. They look for an environment where they can learn, contribute, and where the work they do connects them with broader perspectives.

This was exactly what Selina was looking for when she first heard about Becky. In this interview, she shares how working at Becky has helped her build expertise in Dutch accounting, progress to a more senior role, and find a balance between career development and personal life.

Finding the Right Place to Grow

Selina, can you tell us how your Becky story began? What made you choose Becky for the next step in your career?

I first came across Becky while working at a company focused on nonprofit accounting, mainly for clients from the United States. That was my first experience with international accounting, and I really enjoyed it.

What I heard about Becky early on left a strong impression. But at the time, I didn’t feel quite ready for a new adventure. Looking back, I regret not accepting an interview with Ilma, our Talent Acquisition Specialist, earlier, I’m sure I would have joined Becky sooner!

When I finally spoke with Ilma, I felt confident this was the right next step for me. Becky offered a place where I could grow, develop, and work in a positive environment. That made the decision clear.

Building Expertise and Taking on New Challenges

Once you joined Becky, what helped you settle in? What was your biggest challenge at the beginning?

I started at Becky as a Junior Accountant. From the beginning, I had great support. I was assigned a mentor, my colleague Emir, which made a big difference in helping me settle in.

Together, we worked through the key aspects of Dutch accounting, explored new software, and got familiar with the processes and expectations of our client, Van ’t Hul. Since Dutch accounting was completely new to me, that was definitely the biggest challenge at first. But with the right support and steady effort, I was able to learn step by step.

How did your role develop over time, and what led to your promotion?

From the beginning, my client gave me the opportunity to grow. There were clear expectations about what I needed to learn and deliver in order to move to the next level. I worked steadily toward those goals, and it was rewarding to see my progress recognized.

After my first year at Becky, I was promoted to Semi-Senior Accountant, something I’m very proud of. And for me, it’s not just about the position itself, but about how much I’ve learned and how my responsibilities have expanded. Of course, stepping into a new role also meant taking on new challenges.

“I believe that without good challenges, there’s no real progress. The work is more demanding now, but that’s exactly what I wanted. It helps me keep learning and developing.”

It’s great to see how taking on new challenges has helped Selina grow in her role, exactly the kind of development we aim to support.

What Day-to-Day Work at Becky Looks Like

What do you enjoy most about your work at Becky, both in terms of professional development and daily life?

One of the things I value most is the opportunity to work in Dutch accounting. After more than a year in this field, I can say that I like it even more than working in local accounting. The processes are mostly automated, we use advanced software, and everything is fully digital: there’s no paper involved. It’s an efficient way of working, and it helps me see how things are done differently in the Netherlands. I’m learning a lot through this experience.

I also value the flexibility at Becky. The Sarajevo office is modern and pleasant, and I enjoy going there. But it’s great to have the option to work from home when it makes sense, especially to avoid traffic or better organize my day. This kind of balance really matters.

The work atmosphere is excellent. The office is comfortable, and the team is friendly and supportive. I enjoy spending time with my colleagues, it makes the workday more enjoyable.

Beyond the daily work atmosphere, work-life balance is also very important to me, and, at Becky, it’s really respected. Thanks to that, I can continue practicing ballet, something that I truly love and that gives me energy outside of work. I also appreciate that when the workday ends, I can disconnect and enjoy my free time. Even when working from home, I don’t feel like work takes over everything.

And finally, I appreciate the opportunity to visit the Netherlands. It’s a great way to meet the colleagues I work with remotely, spend time with the Van ’t Hul team in person, see how they work, and learn from them. For me, as someone still building a career, these experiences are very valuable.

Advice to Those Considering Becky

Looking back on your experience so far, what would you say to someone considering joining Becky?

In short, I would sincerely recommend Becky to anyone who values working in a positive and supportive environment. Both the team and the atmosphere here make it a great place to build your career.

At Becky, we believe that extraordinary jobs in finance are built through real growth and meaningful work — exactly what Selina’s story reflects. If this sounds like the kind of environment where you’d like to build your career, we’d be happy to welcome you.
